The Room of No Escape
Projection Mapping · Installation Design · Social Design · 2024
Project by Yujie Tang, supervised by Marci Chi Ma
The Room of No Escape explores hikikomori and severe social withdrawal through the contradictory meaning of home as both shelter and confinement. Research into its social, familial and psychological contexts informed a spatial narrative centred on isolation, repetition and the difficulty of reconnecting with the outside world.
The final installation constructs a fragmented domestic environment from cardboard and origami-inspired forms, combined with video and projection mapping across furniture and surrounding surfaces. Moving images, text and distorted visual sequences transform the room into an immersive representation of withdrawal, using spatial storytelling to communicate a condition that is otherwise largely invisible.
