The Language of Trees: Wood, Wide, Web

Interactive Installation · Creative Coding · Ecological Communication · 2022
Project by Mengyao Zhong, supervised by Marci Chi Ma

The Language of Trees explores communication between forests through the metaphor of mycorrhizal networks, drawing parallels between underground ecological systems and human social networks. Research into plant intelligence, interspecies communication and forest interdependence informed an interactive experience that reframes nature as an active network rather than a passive environment.

The final installation combines an interactive map, recorded forest soundscapes and a Processing-based projection. Different forests can be selected through the interface, while visitors’ voices generate expanding visual signals that overlap and connect on screen, translating sound and participation into a shared representation of communication across people, trees and distant ecosystems.
