The Foods of Tomorrow
Speculative Design · Exhibition Design · Food Futures · 2022
Project by Mengyao Zhong, supervised by Marci Chi Ma
The Foods of Tomorrow speculates on a future in which population growth, food shortages and resource pressure make insects a more common part of everyday diets. Focusing on cicadas, the project explores their nutritional value, lower environmental impact and changing cultural acceptance as an alternative food source.
The final proposal imagines a 2050 insect-food system spanning biotechnology, domestic breeding, automated selling and consumption. These scenarios are brought together through an exhibition design that combines speculative products, interactive displays, visual identity and spatial storytelling, presenting cicadas as part of a possible future food culture.
