Five-Element Music Therapy

Project by Mengyao Zhong, supervised by Marci Chi Ma
Five-Element Music Therapy explores the relationship between traditional Chinese medicine, the Five Elements and the five-tone system of Chinese music. The project translates these interconnected theories into a visual and interactive framework, using illustration to map relationships between organs, emotions, elemental associations and musical tones.
The final outcome is an interactive mat that responds to five spoken syllables through sound, light and colour. Arduino-based voice recognition triggers corresponding musical compositions and illuminated elements around the illustrated surface, turning an abstract traditional healing system into an embodied audiovisual experience.
