Digital Food

Project by Yuqi Shi, supervised by Marci Chi Ma
Digital Food imagines a future in which climate change and rising food-related emissions make some familiar foods increasingly scarce. The project proposes a speculative dining system that replaces selected high-carbon foods with modular “digital food”, combining nutrient layers with sensory cues to recreate aspects of taste, smell, appearance and mouthfeel.
The final proposal develops this idea into a service and product system, including food modules, scent capsules and odour-producing cutlery. Through 3D modelling and material prototyping, foods such as beef, salmon, prawn and chocolate are reinterpreted as transparent modular objects, turning future food scarcity into a tangible multisensory dining experience.
